Social & Economic Benefits

The Woodsmith Project has already delivered significant benefits in the local area.

There are 1,650 people currently working on the Woodsmith Project with over 1,000 of the workforce from the local area -  400 are from Redcar and Cleveland.

The project has generated an additional £1.2 billion to the regional economy of Yorkshire and the North East since construction started.

In 2022, £120 million was spent by Anglo American sourcing goods and services from companies in the region.

Once in operations the project will create approximately 1,000 high skilled jobs for at least the next forty years.

Anglo American’s Thriving Communities Programme focuses on delivering benefits across the area in addition to the direct impact of the jobs created by the project and expenditure in the supply chain. Since it started in 2021, the programme has:

Supported 960 people to develop their skills

Enabled 162 people to move into employment

Engaged over 13,000 students at careers events and activities to promote the science, technology, engineering and maths

Created 108 new business start-ups

Delivered programmes that have supported 966 businesses

Launched an intensive programme, called Achieve, to support secondary school students to achieve their potential

Delivered over 50 projects to support the community environment and facilities

Anglo American has also contributed £4 million to the Woodsmith Foundation since 2020.

The Foundation, which has been established as an independent charity, aims to create a positive legacy from the Woodsmith Project for the local area. To date it has funded over 450 projects and supported a wide range of community organisations.
