The proposed site extends to approximately 79 hectares and includes the decommissioned runway, other areas of hardstanding associated with the airport use and maintained grassland to the perimeter and land that surrounds it from Gogar Burn in the west, to the Fife railway line in the east.
The proposals
The proposals are for the formation of the new access road to serve Edinburgh Airport from the Gogar roundabout, connecting to Myreton Drive and following the fife railway line up to the eastern terminus of Edinburgh Airport.
The Airport’s new Eastern Access Road will improve existing congestion levels on Eastfield Road and potentially the A8 between Gogar roundabout and Eastfield Road. Delivery of this infrastructure is fundamental to the existing operations of Edinburgh Airport as well as to ensure future growth in West Edinburgh.
The proposals will:

provide an additional access to the Airport to improve resilience

relieve congestion on Eastfield Road

provide the opportunity to improve active travel and public transport times to the Airport

improve connections from the Gateway rail station to the Airport
-
improve journey times to the Airport from Edinburgh city and the East
-
ease congestion during major events at the Royal Highland Showground
-
enable delivery of IBG phases 2/3 and other regeneration projects in West Edinburgh
-
provide a new route for the Airport’s cargo operations, moving heavy traffic away from new housing developments around Turnhouse Road and from the Maybury junction.

Route alignment
Given the different alignment options identified by CEC in the Local Development Plan and in the West Edinburgh Transport Appraisal Refresh; and, the opportunity provided by the closure of the 12/30 runway the Airport have considered different route options for the new road.
In particular, options that follow the Gogar Burn past Gogar Castle and the now preferred route that follows the Fife rail line.
The benefits of the chosen alignment are:

It is located further away from the Gogar Burn which is an ecologically sensitive area

It is located further away from the Gogar Castle Listed Buildings

It keeps major infrastructure concentrated in one location alongside the railway

It will split airport traffic (passengers, staff and cargo) and the traffic generated by the development of the International Business Gateway (which is a national commitment by Scottish Government) and other regeneration sites early reducing the need for a long dual carriageway section.
